Checking the brakes

Observing the brakes is your part; repairing them is the workshop’s.

This guide is compiled from manufacturer manuals and well-known bike care sources; it has not been reviewed by a mechanic. You can confirm the information with reliable sources and with our store. When in doubt about safety, don’t ride.

When?

  • The lever comes close to the handlebar
  • Rubbing or a metallic noise
  • Less braking power

How?

  1. Stand beside the bike, squeeze each brake separately and try to push the bike.
  2. The lever must not touch the handlebar and the bike must not move.

What does it depend on?

How often depends on how much and where you ride, the weather, the component and the manufacturer’s instructions. Instead of a fixed schedule, look for the signs above.
