Replacing a punctured inner tube

The most useful job to learn so you are not stranded: a spare tube, two tyre levers and a fitting pump are enough.

This guide is compiled from manufacturer manuals and well-known bike care sources; it has not been reviewed by a mechanic. You can confirm the information with reliable sources and with our store. When in doubt about safety, don’t ride.

When?

  • The tyre goes flat suddenly or within hours
  • A nail, glass or a cut in the tyre
  • A hiss from the valve or tyre when you pump

How?

  1. Remove the wheel (if needed, ask us once in store to show you how, for the brake and gears).
  2. Let out the remaining air; use the tyre levers to bring one side of the tyre off the rim and take out the tube.
  3. Feel carefully around the inside of the tyre with your fingertips and remove what caused it; otherwise the new tube punctures too.
  4. Give the new tube a little air so it holds its shape, fit it starting at the valve and push the tyre back onto the rim by hand.
  5. Pump to the range printed on the tyre sidewall, refit the wheel and check how it is fixed.
  6. Always test the brakes before you ride off.

What does it depend on?

How often you puncture depends on the roads, the tyre’s age and pressure. If it keeps happening, have the tyre, rim tape and pressure checked in store.
