When?
- After the wheel was removed and refitted (transport, tyre change)
- Sideways play or a knock in the wheel
- A brake pad rubbing at one spot of the rim or disc
How?
- Lift the bike and push and pull the wheel sideways by hand; there should be no play.
- With a quick-release lever, it must be fully closed and lie along the frame; closing it should take enough force to leave a mark in your palm.
- With a thru-axle, the lever or head must be fully closed as the manufacturer shows.
- Spin the wheel: it should run centred in the frame and fork without rubbing.
- If you are not sure, don’t ride; we check it in store in a few minutes.
What does it depend on?
Do it every time a wheel has been out and after carrying the bike on a car; in daily use it is part of the pre-ride check.
